Background of the Study
The prevalence of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety among university students has become a critical issue in higher education globally, with Lagos State reflecting similar trends. University students today face myriad challenges, including rigorous academic demands, financial constraints, and the pressures of transitioning into adulthood. In Lagos—a bustling urban metropolis where educational institutions are pressured to meet high academic standards—students are often caught between high expectations and limited coping mechanisms (Olumide, 2023). The urban environment, characterized by rapid modernization and socioeconomic disparities, exacerbates stressors that predispose young adults to mental health problems. Recent studies indicate that the increasing use of social media and digital communication further compounds feelings of isolation and inadequacy among students, contributing to elevated levels of depression and anxiety (Chukwu, 2023).
In addition, cultural factors and societal stigma attached to mental health challenges hinder open discussion and timely intervention. Family pressures and the fear of being labeled as “weak” discourage many students from seeking professional help. Although some universities have initiated counseling and peer-support programs, these measures remain insufficient relative to the growing need. There is also an evident gap in empirical data on the specific manifestations and severity of these conditions within Lagos State, which impedes the formulation of targeted interventions (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024). The interplay between academic stress, social expectations, and the urban hustle makes it imperative to assess how depression and anxiety affect students' academic performance and overall well‐being. Understanding these factors will aid policymakers, educational administrators, and mental health practitioners in designing culturally sensitive, comprehensive intervention strategies. Moreover, given the dynamic nature of urban stressors, there is a pressing need to periodically evaluate mental health trends among university students to ensure timely and appropriate responses to emerging challenges (Adeyemi, 2024). Ultimately, a thorough investigation into the prevalence and contributing factors of depression and anxiety in this demographic will illuminate pathways for early intervention, prevention, and the promotion of a supportive academic environment.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing recognition of mental health challenges in higher education, many Lagos-based universities still struggle with under-diagnosed and under-treated depression and anxiety among their students. Surveys indicate that a substantial proportion of students suffer in silence due to cultural stigma and the fear of academic repercussions (Okoro, 2024). The inadequacy of campus mental health services—characterized by limited counseling resources and fragmented support structures—compounds this problem. The urban pressures unique to Lagos, such as high living costs, intense competition, and fast-paced lifestyles, create an environment where academic and personal challenges merge, leading to sustained mental health deterioration.
This study addresses the lack of localized empirical evidence that identifies the prevalence, intensity, and underlying factors of depression and anxiety among university students in Lagos State. Without reliable data, institutional interventions remain largely generic and fail to meet the nuanced needs of the student population. Furthermore, the reluctance to report mental health issues due to pervasive stigma means that many students do not receive the necessary support, which could otherwise mitigate the risk of academic underperformance, dropout, or even self-harm (Emeka, 2023). Thus, a systematic assessment is urgently needed to bridge the gap between observed mental health challenges and the availability of effective support systems. Such research will not only inform policy formulation but also enhance early detection and intervention strategies within academic institutions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To determine the prevalence of depression and anxiety among university students in Lagos State.
2. To identify the socio-economic, academic, and cultural factors contributing to these mental health challenges.
3. To recommend targeted intervention strategies and policy measures to improve student mental health support.
Research Questions
1. What is the current prevalence of depression and anxiety among university students in Lagos State?
2. Which factors—academic, socio-economic, or cultural—are most strongly associated with these mental health issues?
3. What interventions can effectively mitigate the incidence and severity of depression and anxiety in this demographic?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant relationship between academic pressure and the prevalence of depression among university students.
2. Financial constraints and social isolation are significant predictors of anxiety symptoms.
3. Enhanced access to comprehensive counseling services is associated with a reduction in depressive and anxious symptoms.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study targets undergraduate and postgraduate students in selected Lagos State universities. Data will be collected through self-reported questionnaires and interviews, which may be subject to reporting biases. The findings may not be generalizable to all Nigerian students due to regional differences and the urban focus of the study.
